Cultivating Oyster Mushrooms - 10/26/2025
2 - 4 pm Growing your own tasty mushrooms isn’t hard, and Aubrey Carter can show you how! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll delve into the fascinating world of fungi and learn some of the simplest mushroom cultivation techniques that you can practice at home. Aubrey will walk through how to cultivate edible oyster mushrooms with common household supplies, and each participant will go home with their own oyster mushroom grow kit. We’ll also explore how to encourage edible mushrooms to grow in your yard, and each participant will be offered winecap mycelium to take home and introduce to wood chips/compost on your property. This event is family friendly, and kids (3rd grade and older) are encouraged to attend. Come spread spores and grow healthy, local food!
Aubrey has worked at several ecological institutions in and around the NYC area, most prominently with the Central Park Conservancy in Manhattan. Five years ago, he started a weekly newsletter at www.mushroommonday.com that features fun facts and an ecological profile of mushrooms he finds throughout his travels. Aubrey recently relocated to the Cape from New York and has started to spread his mycelium in this fungi-friendly ecosystem. He cultivates mushrooms both indoors and outdoors, speaks at mycological conferences, and this past spring helped revive the Cape Cod Mycological Society.
