Northern sheep laurel is a remarkable evergreen shrub, capable of growing in boggy to sandy soils, and of tolerating the coldest Zone 1 winters. While not liked by confiers and toxic to mammals, it provides winter forage and cover for songbirds. It has long lasting pink blooms displayed in the late spring through the early parts of summer. Re-blooming of this species is common in the autumn. Plants spread moderately by rhizomes and form a dense 12 to 18 inch high ground cover. Slender grayish green foliage surrounds the stems and is evergreen in milder years.
